Artist's Statement

Being an artist is not merely occupational, but a way of living. It is as intrinsic to my identity as being queer, of the Earth, a lover, and human. Art is my voice; it is my love and my agony. And it is through art that I beg for understanding.

I am a multidisciplinary artist who primarily explores portraiture with the intent of empathetic exchange, both between the subject and viewer and between the artist and subject. Capturing my model hosts a sacred intimacy where, without words, we connect and communicate; it is an act of love and an expression of adoration.

My work frequently features queer bodies, experiences, and love. Taking inspiration from classical religious art and the old masters—including Caravaggio and Michelangelo—as well as photographers of the 1980’s—Mapplethorpe and Goldin—I am attracted to juxtaposition, duality, and the union of classical and contemporary. I strive to elevate "disagreeable" subject matter—such as sexuality, eroticism, and visible transness—to a degree of "holiness". I hope to inspire reverence for what might typically be deemed sinful with detailed rendering, religious iconography, and composition.

As a writer and poet, story creation bleeds into all areas of my practice. With costuming, scene setting, and acting, I create theatrical and surrealist still narratives that hyperbolize my subject matter. I work with concepts of self as character, and vice versa, to investigate identity and the fluidity of the self, with emphasis on transness, and how this shift influences perception and consequent behavior.

It is of particular importance in my practice to elevate trans existence, not only due to my own transness but also due to the harmful anti-trans rhetoric that permeates our current political climate. Trans lives must continue to be celebrated, and trans voices must continue to be heard.
